HOME GUARD RETALIATES IN SELF-DEFENCE

An attempt to grab a T-56 weapon of a Home Guard by an unidentified group of men was foiled in the general area of KANTALE during small hours on Monday (13 September 2004) when the Home Guard retaliated in self-defence, killing one of the intruders on the spot.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that three men including the deceased reached the 92nd MILE POST security checkpoint on the KANTALE – TRINCOMALEE main road, manned by Home Guards around 1.20 a.m., on a van and suddenly tried to grab the T-56 weapon of a Home Guard on duty at the point.

The Home Guard in self-defence has fired at those men killing one of them on the spot.

Fellow travellers of the victim had immediately fled the area using the same vehicle after they saw his colleague being shot and subsequently fall on the ground with gunshot injuries.

However, it was later identified the deceased as Second Lieutenant W. L. A. S. S MANGALARATNE of the Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG), who was designated to be discharged from the Army shortly on disciplinary grounds.

Other suspects involved in the incident were to be arrested soon.

The KANTALE Police and the Military Police have commenced investigations.
