President Enshrines Treasure in 'Sandahiru Maha Seya'


Enshrinement of treasure and relics in the base ring of the 'Sandahiru Maha Seya' (Triumphant Pagoda), under construction at Mahamevunauyana, Anuradhapura, on the initiatives of the Secretary Defence and Urban Development, took place on Poson Full Moon Poya Day, Thursday (12) morning, a day of utmost importance to the Nation with the arrival of Ven Mihindu Thero in Sri Lanka centuries ago.

HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the conceptual architect of the Pagoda, 'Sandahiru Maha Seya' arrived at the venue on the invitation of Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development for placement of those valuable treasure, in accordance with rites and rituals of Sri Lankan royalties in the past.

The enshrinement of those sacred objects in the lower base ring of the 'Sandahiru Maha Seya' which is 257 ft in height and being constructed with the use of more than 260 lakhs of bricks, 170,000 cement bags and 9000 tons of limestone, is to be dedicated to the immortalization of the memory of tri-service War Heroes who liberated the country from brutal clutches of terrorism after a spell of 35 years.

Last year, on Poson Full Moon Day those relics and treasure to be placed in the Pagoda were taken to Anuradhapura with the completion of the second boundary layer (Pesa Walalla). Tri-service personnel including 9 Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) Corps troops have been at the forefront of constructing it with consultations of civil sector experts.

President Rajapaksa after religious observances made offerings and enshrined relics and treasure to the new Dagoba and inaugurated its construction of the body structure.

A large gathering including Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Ministers, Governor for North Central Province, Chief Minister and Provincial Councilors, senior officials of the Ministry of Defence, tri-service officers, Police officers and invitees, were present at the site.
