Phase II of Commander’s Housing Project to Erect 51 New Houses for War Heroes

As the Commander’s conceptual notion of providing decent housing facilities firstly for disable War Heroes, family members of fallen War Heroes and secondly for serving soldiers, has begun to blossom into a reality as the Phase II of the project, is now in full swing to erect 51 more new state-of-the-art houses across the island, thanks to generosity, offered by 21 respective Regiments of those beneficiaries.

Earlier on 12 Oct 2015, 35 new houses, erected by 18 Regiments under the Phase I, using land slots, made available by the beneficiaries themselves to the Army engineers were vested in them by the Secretary to Ministry of Defence Eng Karunasena Hettiarachchi at the invitation of the project’s pioneering architect, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army.

Phase II of the project, launched with the sheer determination of providing more and more solace to bereaved families of fallen War Heroes and disable ones a few days ago is to be completed by March 2016 after constructing those proposed 51 new houses at different locations, provided by the beneficiaries.

Each house, is worth of Rs 1.5 million and 66% of the estimated cost is to be provided by the Army Headquarters and the rest from respective Regiments while the remainder is to be supplemented by the Directorate of Welfare, the coordinators for the Army construction project. Additional expenditure however has to be shared by the recipient if they so desire to have any alterations or extensions added to the original architectural plan.

Under the Phase II, relatives of fallen War Heroes and injured War Heroes from Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC), Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA), Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE), Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC), Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR), Gemunu Watch (GW), Gajaba Regiment (GR), Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR), Commando Regiment (CR), Special Forces (SF), Military Intelligence Corps (MIC), Corps of Engineer Service (CES), Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (SLEME), Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP), Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC), Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps (SLAWC), Sri Lanka Rifle Corps (SLRC), Sri Lanka Army Pioneer Corps (SLAPC) and Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) are among the beneficiaries under this new visionary project of the Commander.

The new initiative came into effect early this year after the Commander closely observed and evaluated the need for proper and decent housing facilities for family members of fallen War Heroes and some of those differently able ones who have rendered an invaluable service to the country as true patriotic sons of Sri Lanka during the war for peace before May 2009.

Phase II project in the past few days saw inaugural foundation-stone laying ceremonies at different locations to suit the aspirations of the beneficiaries after formalities and issues, related to house plans, surveying, approval of local authorities, auspicious times, changes of venues, etc, were effectively resolved.
