Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna (SFHQ-J), in keeping with the government policy of releasing civilians’ owned portions of land, hitherto being used by the troops in the Jaffna peninsula formally, handed over another 32-acre private land, belonging to 45 Jaffna families on December 21, 2012.
This stretch of land at Ramavil where the former IDP welfare centre stood after the completion of humanitarian operations, was earlier held by LTTE terrorists, using it as a base before the Army rolled on to Jaffna and liberated the peninsula in the year 1996.
Soon after the capture of Jaffna, the troops set up its own camp in this land portion without letting terrorists to intrude the area, but with the need for more space for displaced people, Army troops dismantled their camp on their own and facilitated the establishment of the famous Ramavil Welfare Centre, which now is only history.
Before the official release of the land was made in a simple ceremony, 523 Brigade troops undertook the responsibility of completely reclaiming the land and cleaning it thoroughly.
Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, SFHQ-J, as the Chief Guest symbolically handed over the Army-held extent of land to the Divisional Secretary for Chavakachcheri Ms Shanthi Seelan on the occasion. Brigadier Anura Sudasinghe, General Officer Commanding, 52 Division and several senior officers were present at the occasion.
