New Pre-Fabricated Technology Gifts Jaffna Army Camps with Permanent Structures

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development, currently in Jaffna, taking an exceptional interest in ongoing renovation and reconstruction work of existing military camps in the peninsula, on Tuesday (12) went to the Jaffna town-based Army camp formation, in order to see how modern pre-fabricated constructions are replacing the old ones in the premises.

Under the government’s policy to provide the best of welfare and facilities to the troops serving around the country, the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) on the directions given by the Commander of the Army is in the process of replacing old and  dilapidated accommodation billets, administrative wings and other essential units in the region, replacing them with high tech pre-fabricated materials for long-term comfort and durability.

Mr Rajapaksa, accompanied by Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Security Force Commander, Jaffna inspected work in progress inside the main Jaffna camp and shared a couple of views with senior officers and technicians on hand. The visiting Secretary Defence went round the premises eagerly and had a close look at construction work, along with a couple of senior officers.

Before his visit to the Jaffna town camp, Mr Rajapaksa ceremonially opened the mammoth new cinema hall cum theatre, the first of its kind in the Army and the recreation complex at SFHQ-J premises earlier on Tuesday (12).

Battle-fatigued troops serving the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) would hereafter be able to rest and relax freely as anyone else does in the North since they have now their own state-of-the-art air-conditioned recreation complex, equipped with a 350-seat theatre auditorium cum cinema hall, spacious cafeteria, billiard hall, saloon, tailor shop, etc all under one roof.

Ceremonial inauguration of this new welfare project of the SFHQ-J, implemented on the directions given by the Commander of the Army took place during a brief ceremony, headed by Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development at the invitation of Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Security Force Commander, Jaffna who threw his full weight behind realization of the project.

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Chief Guest for the inaugural opening cut a ribbon, unveiled a plaque and warmed the new theatre complex lighting the traditional oil lamp as the milk pot boiling ritual, got underway symbolizing prosperity. The entire new building complex cost the Army Rs 52 million with its technologically-advanced theatre facilitates, both for staging and screening purposes.

SFHQ-J which is the central wing of tri-service security to the whole of Jaffna peninsula and the Northern Province has been rendering a multitude of services to the benefit of Northerners in the past few years, particularly in the aftermath of the successful completion of the war, but on the other hand, hundreds of soldiers serving Jaffna have hardly had enough comfortable accommodation facilities or adequate space for rest and recreation.

As incorporated in the Mahinda Chintanaya policy document, the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya soon after assumption of office wanted island-wide Army formations to enhance multiple welfare schemes, intended for Army personnel who toiled day and night to defend the country in the past three decades.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army who is also in Jaffna at the moment, together with a few more service chiefs, was attending the Presidential inauguration of a series of other mega development projects elsewhere in the peninsula, some of which have been effectively completed by Army troops.
