New Jaffna Commander Takes Office

MAJOR GENERAL MAHINDA HATHURUSINGHE RSP ndc IG assumed office this morning (3) as Commander, Security Forces, Jaffna after a brief ceremony, attended by religious dignitaries and senior Army and tri-service officers.  

Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe succeeds Major General L.B.R Mark who assumed duties as Director General Infantry at Army Headquarters.

Major General Hathurusinghe on arrival at the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna (SFHQ-J) was accorded military honours according to traditions. He inspected the Guard Turn-out at the entrance before being accorded a Guard of Honour by the soldiers.

Later on, religious dignitaries representing Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Christian denominations invoked blessings on the new appointment after he lit the traditional oil lamp upon entering the office premises. Soon after religious observances, he initialed the first official document to signify the acceptance of the office.

After the inauguration of his office, Major General Hathurusinghe addressed all ranks at the SFHQ-J Indoor stadium and called upon everybody to join hands together to promote the Army image and help develop the motherland.

Major General Hathurusinghe served as Commander, Security Forces Headquarters (Kilinochchi), General Officer Commanding, 65 Division, Operations Commander, Colombo, Artillery Brigade Commander, Brigade Commander in 652 & 553 Brigades and many other key appointments during his career before he was appointed Commander SFHQ-J.

Major General Hathurusinghe to his credit has read for Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at Rajarata University and Masters in National Security and Administration at National Defence University, Philippines and followed several other military courses.

After studies at Horana, Thakshila Central College, he joined Sri Lanka Army on 19th September 1980 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 18th July 1981. He was promoted to the rank of Major General on 8th December 2008.
