The new Commander of the Army Lieutenant General A. W. J. Crishanthe De Silva, giving prominence to the memory of fallen War Heroes made a beeline to the Ranaviru Smarakaya (War Hero Monument) at Battaramulla soon after he took the reins as the 21st Commander of the Army at the Army Headquarters.
At Battaramulla, the Commander, in a gesture of gratitude and appreciation, welcomed his predecessor, General Daya Ratnayake who just retired after a distinguished military career on Saturday (21) as the Chief Guest to the simple memorial ceremony. A two-minute silence after a while recalled the memories of those brave soldiers who laid their lives for the sake of the country’s territorial integrity.
The brief memorial ceremony saw both General Daya Ratnayake (Retd), former Commander of the Army and the new Commander of the Army made for the foot of the memorial for placement of floral wreaths as melancholic musical melodies began reverberating.
The simple ceremony culminated with the sounding of the Last Post, the typical bugle beats at the end of the day.
Principal Staff Officers, Senior officers including Major General E.M.M Ambanpola, Deputy Chief of Staff were present at the memorial ceremony.
Upon his return to the Army Headquarters, the Commander took part in an all rank tea table before he delivered a formal address to the senior officers at the Military Secretariat auditorium later on Monday (23).
