New Commander of the Army Assumes Office Amid Military Ceremonials &;amp; Religious Observances

The newly-appointed 21st Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General A. W. J. Crishanthe De Silva RWP USP ndu psc of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) who took office this morning (23) at the Army Headquarters, was greeted with military honours and other ceremonials before a large representative gathering of senior officers and other ranks.

On his arrival at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) parade grounds, a Guard Turn Out, welcomed the new Commander after the Commanding Officer at the Army Headquarters received him at the entrance.

Major General E.M.M Ambanpola, Deputy Chief of Staff afterwards greeted the Commander on arrival at the parade ground and requested him to take the salute from the special dais. Major General Channa Gunathilake, Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) accompanied the Chief Guest to the dais in conformity with military traditions.  

The next segment of the day’s ceremony saw the Parade Commander, Captain Charith Cabraal, bearing the symbolic sword, reported the parade, comprised of 2 officers and 48 other ranks to the day’s protagonist who was invited to review the Guard of Honour in accordance with age-old military traditions.

The scenario, set in the background of fluttering colourful Regimental flags, added grandeur and significance to the day’s brief but dignified event to the rhythmic beats and melodies of patriotic values, played by parade troops as the new Commander, went past reviewing the military honours, along with the Parade Commander.

After a while, the Commander reached the entrance to his office at the Military Secretariat, to be received by Principal Staff Officers and senior officers.

Offer of the traditional ‘Deheth Wattiya’ to the members of the Maha Sangha paved the way to Ven Galaboda Gnanissara Nayake Thero, Incumbent Hunupitiya Gangaramaya to make a brief oration (Anusasana). Amid chanting of Seth Pirith, the new Commander made offerings to the Buddha and lit the traditional oil lamp to inaugurate his office.

As chanting was on, the new Commander, accompanied by the new Military Secretary and the Military Assistant afterwards placed his signature on the first official document, signifying the symbolic formal acceptance of this prestigious office while his spouse, Mrs Nayana De Silva and twin sons looked on.

Buddhist monks tying a blessed thread on Lieutenant General De Silva’s right arm afterwards invoked blessings on him and his office. Offer of Pirikara to the Maha Sangha culminated the religious observances.

Ven Dodampahala Assaji Nayake Thero, Ven Galaboda Gnanissara Nayake Thero, Ven Thiniyawala Palitha Thero, Ven Banagala Upathissa Nayake Thero and several more monks were associated with the religious observances of the inaugural ceremony.
