New Chief of Staff, Maj General Prabath Dematanpitiya Takes Office

Major General Prabath Dematanpitiya, Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Signal Corps this morning (16) assumed office as the 56th Chief of Staff of the Army during a simple ceremony at his new office in the Army Headquarters, amid religious observances, greetings and best wishes.

Upon his arrival, he made religious offerings before members of the Maha Sangha commenced ‘Pirith’ chanting to invoke blessings on the new office. While chanting was in progress, Major General Prabath Dematanpitiya left his signature for an official document to signify the acceptance of his new office. A representative gathering of Senior Officers were there to extend best wishes to him at the occasion.

He was serving as the Commandant, Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) before he took over this new appointment. Here follows a brief profile of Major General Prabath Damatanpitiya:

Major General D.A Prabath Dematanpitiya joined the Sri Lanka Army on 07 October 1985 and was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant on 24 July 1986 having completed his Basic Military Training at Sri Lanka Military Academy and also at the Officers’ Training School in Pakistan. Subsequently, he was posted to the Sri Lanka Signal Corps as a Young Officer, and thereafter promoted to the ranks of Lieutenant on 07 October 1988, Captain on 11 January 1990, Major on 01 November 1994, Lieutenant Colonel on 10 May 2005, Colonel on 31 January 2008 and Brigadier on 05 October 2010 before he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 01.11.2016.

Major General Prabath Dematanpitiya has held various Command, Staff and Instructional appointments both in the Army and at Regimental levels during his 35 years of service in the Army. Some of the key appointments held at the regimental level were Adjutant Regimental Centre, Commandant School of Signals, Staff Officer 1 at Signal Brigade, Commanding Officer 3 SLSC and Commander Signal Brigade. Other key appointments he held at Army level were Senior Instructor Sri Lanka Military Academy, Colonel General Staff at 23 Infantry Division, Directing Staff at Defence Services Command and Staff College Sapugaskanda, Commander 523 and 552 Infantry Brigades, Brigadier Coordinator at Defence Services Command and Staff College Sapugaskanda and Director Information Technology at the Army Headquarters. He was the General Officer Commanding of the 56 Division before he was appointed as the Commandant, Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC). In addition to above, he is the current Chairman of the Army Wushu Committee.

Major General Prabath Dematanpitiya is a graduate of the Army Command and Staff College Sapugaskanda and was the proud recipient of the Golden Pen Award for producing the best research paper in the year 2001. Moreover, he is a proud alumna of the National Defence University of Pakistan. Further, he holds an MSc in National Security and War Studies, earned from the National Defence University of Pakistan and an MBA in Supply Chain Management at Kotelawala Defence University.
