New Army Recruits Including Tamils Join Active Service as Tradesmen


124 newly enlisted Army tradesmen, including 11 Tamil youths from Kilinochchi after their training as storemen, clerks, drivers, electricians, bakers, etc at the Security Force Headquarters-Killinochchi (SFHQ-KLN), passed out at a ceremony, held at 65 Division Headquarters premises on Saturday (17).

The ceremony, headed by Major General G .R. H Dias, General Officer Commanding, 65 Division as the Chief Guest, took place in the presence of a large gathering of next of kin of Army recruits and Army personnel.

The batch underwent basic training under the 15 (V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) troops and those 11 Tamil recruits learnt Sinhala language also during the training on a concept, proposed by the Commander of the Army in order to promote reconciliation and co-existence. Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, SFHQ-KLN supervised the training.              

The batch of 124 recruits consists of 11 Tamil males as per the concept of the Commander of Army to enhance national integrity of the country. The ceremony was graced by Major General G .R. H Dias, General Officer Commanding as the Chief Guest.

The occasion was coloured with drill displays, unarmed combat displays, Tamil cultural feats and other entertaining features. Each recruit received a gift parcel containing garments, sponsored by the officers and soldiers serving the SFHQ-KLN.  

Private M. Marasinghe received the award from the Chief Guest as the Best Recruit. Lieutenant K.N Priyankara (Best Platoon Commander), Sergeant Gamini Dissanayake (Best Platoon Sergeant), Lance Corporal R.M Kumara (Best Section Commander), Private N.Thinesh (Best Physically Fit Soldier) and Private W.A.K.R Wijendra (Best Shooter) also received separate awards for their performances during the training.
