Military Formality Revived: VIR 'Guest Night' Raises a Toast to Commander-in-Chief

Sri Lanka Army’s Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), the first post-war regiment to have received the President’s Colours and the Regimental Colours, in appreciation of their exceptional contribution and bravery, had their formal glittering ‘Guest Night’ and the banquet on Wednesday (27) evening at Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) Regimental Headquarters, Modera, Colombo.

The historic and momentous formality the Army has inherited from the times of our imperial masters, assumed greater significance and dignity this evening (27) when the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, together with the First Lady Mrs Shiranthi Rajapaksa, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, adding grandeur to the ceremonial event.

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development, Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, Ministry of Defence Seva Vanitha Unit, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch, Major General R.V. Samarathunge, Colonel of the Regiment, VIR and Mrs Preethi Samarathunge, Chairperson, VIR Seva Vanitha Unit and a representative gathering of 150 officers with their spouses, attended the special event.

Commander of the Army received the Chief Guest on arrival in the company of VIR Colonel of the Regiment and Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, offering a bouquet of flowers, welcomed the First Lady.

Soon after the band made the formal ‘Dinner Call’ in accordance with military traditions, a toast was hosted in honour of the visiting Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Rajapaksa before the banquet proper commenced with regalia.

Towards the end of the arrangement, Major General R.V. Samarathunge as Colonel of the Regiment made a brief oration and presented several tokens of mementos to participating distinguished guests. Raising a separate toast to the future well-being of the VIR regiment, the proceedings of the event came to a close.
   
VIR with the objective of enhancing the strength of the Army was raised exactly 23 years ago on 22 March 1990 at Sinhavilluwatta, Puttalam after the Regimental Headquarters was relocated at Boyagane on 26th September 1988.

All battalions in the VIR, commencing from the landmark Mavil Aru episode up until the culmination of the Wanni humanitarian operations and the recovery of the terrorist leader’s corpse, played decisive and undisputed roles with their expertise in volatile combat and unchallenged infantry prowess.
