It is with great pride and humble pleasure I issue this message as the 21st Commander of the Army which boasts a dignified and proud history.I wish to record my gratitude and respect to HE the President and Hon. Prime Minister on this occasion as I reach the apex of my 35-year of military career as the Commander of the Army.
I reiterate the fact that Sri Lanka Army as a valiant force with its unmatched history of 65 years dedicatedly, has defended the territorial integrity, sovereignty and unitary status of our motherland and eradicated the world’s most ruthless terrorism once for all. To realize that objective, War Heroes in their hundreds have made supreme sacrifices and sustained injuries, risking own lives, together with members of the civil staff, all of who deserve my deep gratitude and appreciation at this hour. Besides, at this memorable moment, I wish to pay a glowing tribute to all past Commanders of the Army who served its course committedly.
It is no exaggeration to mention here the significance of protecting our motherland while simultaneously discharging our duties as a professional organization. Likewise, everyone in the Army while maintaining high standards of discipline and professionalism should be determined to receive the respect of the public, let me underline. Professionalism, discipline and efficiency are the hallmarks of a full-fledged soldier, and all of you should therefore behave accordingly. Those professional skills, together with the strict discipline at all levels can only be gained by acting with responsibility.
Welfare of the soldiers need to be further enhanced and high standards among them be maintained at all times, and for that all Commanding Officers, should take necessary steps, enabling soldiers to maintain a sound mind, to engage in their duties. By doing so, the Army’s efficiency and productivity could be enhanced to high standards.
At this important juncture, I wish to pay my gratitude to all who supported me during my successful military career in many ways and a special word of gratitude, should go to my wife who has stood behind me as my driving force right throughout, together with my children, parents, teachers and all associates who deserve a special word of thanks as I assume duties.
I wish strength and courage to all of you to pursue your duties and responsibilities with more vigour and commitment in the future too while protecting the motherland, despite any threats to our lives.
