Hundreds of Mannar based soldiers, generally, associated with the possession of a gun as part of their duty commitments, gave a short respite to it last week and entered the paddy fields with a sickle to reap what they sowed.
542 Brigade troops in Mannar covering about 1.5 acres in the famous ‘Mannar Rice Bowl’ area cultivated barren fields and nurtured the crops for more than three months until the paddy harvest reaches maturity.
On Monday (March 19), those farming soldiers at the auspicious second entered the paddy fields, together with Colonel H.L.V.M Liyanage, Commander, 542 Brigade and conducted the harvesting after ancient rites and rituals. Paddy thus reaped was to be sold to the public in the area after the maiden portion was dedicated to the deities.
Brigadier M.A.M Dias, General Officer Commanding, 54 Division together with several senior officers inaugurated the auspicious harvesting practice.
