Major General Sumeda Perera, New DGGS Takes Office


Major General Sumeda Perera assumed office as the new Director General General Staff (DGGS) at Army Headquarters after a brief ceremony on Thursday (22) morning. 

Major General Sumeda Perera lit the traditional oil lamp upon his entry into the new office and inaugurated it before religious blessings were invoked on his new appointment. Members of the Maha Sangha of Thalawathugoda Sri Sugatharamaya Viharaya headed by Ven Vederipitiye Thapassi Thero chanted Seth Pirith and blessed the new Director General General Staff. Afterwards, Major General Perera presented Pirikara to the monks.

Later on, he symbolically placed his signature on a document, signifying the formal acceptance of the office as the auspicious minute struck. Military Secretary, Heads of Directorates and several senior officers were there to greet the new DGGS.

Major General Perera, a past pupil from Kurunegala Maliyadeva College, was the Commander, Security Force Headquarters - West until Wednesday (21), an appointment he took over early 2013. Before that Major General Perera has served a number of other key appointments, including Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Wanni, Military Spokesman, General Officer Commanding, 22 Division, etc.

Major General Perera who has also actively contributed to the fight against terrorism has been the Colonel of the Regiment, Special Forces.
