Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda on Sunday (28) assumed duties as the 45th Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) amidst military formalities at the SLAVF Headquarters premises at Kosgama, Seethawaka.
The day’s proceedings in connection with the assumption of duties got to a start after the day’s Chief Guest was welcomed by Brigadier Nihal Samarawickrama, Inspector of Training at SLAVF at the main entrance before he was invited to review the Guard Turnout. Afterwards, Major General Christy Jayasinghe, Deputy Commandant ushered him to the saluting dais to receive the Guard of Honour in the SLAVF's “Rendezvous” ground, presented by the troops of the 2nd Battalion of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry.
Subsequently, the Senior Officer amidst invocation of blessings of major faiths in his new office, placed his signature for an official document, symbolizing the formal acceptance of his appointment. Later, the Senior Officer planted a sapling in the premises to signify his inauguration of the office.
The Senior Officer was afterwards invited to join refreshments with the Deputy Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Principal Staff Officer and all Branch Heads of the Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, along with serving members and Other Ranks of the Headquarters where they shared a couple of thoughts with the gathering. In his brief address to the occasion, he underlined the importance of moving ahead as an organization with discipline, skills and professionalism. Further, he focused on the Sri Lanka Army's 'Way Forward Strategy 2020-2025,' initiated by the present Commander of the Army and highlighted the accountability towards one’s duty as a responsible member for the upliftment of the Volunteer Force.
Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda held the appointment of the Commander, Security Forces - Kilinochchi (SF-KLN) prior to this new appointment. He succeeds Major General Dhammika Jayasinghe who just retired from the Army.
