571 Brigade in Kilinochchi with the support of Lion's Club in Colombo, recently took an initiative to give away 40 push bicycles among Kilinochchi students as one more of their humanitarian social service projects.
Army troops in the 571 Brigade on the instructions of its Brigade Commander Colonel Nanda Hathurusinghe, liaised with school and educational authorities in Kilinochchi area and selected the most deserving students, resident in poverty-stricken remote areas.
Distribution of those forty push bicycles among students took place during a simple ceremony, organized by the 571 Brigade at the Kilinochchi Maha Vidyalaya premises in the presence of members of the Lion Clubs and education authorities.
The push bicycle for generations, has been the most widely used popular mode of transport in the northern province as the public have found its use is much easier on flat roads and healthier. More than two third of the student population uses it in the north according to findings.
The project, in parallel to the Army’s ongoing extensive humanitarian and welfare roles, being effected in war-affected areas for the benefit of civilians as per instructions of the Commander of the Army, has received the blessings of the Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Kilinochchi.
Several senior officers and senior Kilinochchi civilians took part in the ceremony.
