Jaffna Soldiers Repair an Abandoned Public Well for Savalkattu Villagers


Troops of 11th Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (11 SLSR), under their Civil Military Coordination (CIMIC) projects in the area recently repaired an abandoned well, situated in a plot of state land for the use of villagers at Savalkattu in Manippay, Jaffna.

This drinking-water well remained totally covered with soil for many years until the reconstruction commenced on 19th January 2012 with the permission of the Divisional Secretariat. The Commanding Officer 11 SLSR and officers serving in the area identified villagers’ needs when they met community leaders in the area. President of Savalkattu Development Society Mr. Tharmalingam, President of Savalkattu Fisheries Society Mr. Ponnambalam, President of Vairava Kovil Mr. Shankar and a few other villagers met the Commanding Officer 11 SLSR and requested that particular well be restored for the benefit of the families living in the area that lacks water. MAGA (Private) Construction Company helped the soldiers during excavation of the well.

On the Sinhala and Hindu New Year day (13), Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, at the invitation of the Commander 513 Brigade Brigadier Pradeep Silva, declared open the well amidst religious rituals, conducted at the nearby Vairavar Hindu Temple.   

Grama Niladhari of the area Mr. Chandrarajah addressing the gathering at the opening ceremony profusely thanked the Commander and all troops of the Security Forces for the community services rendered for the civilians in Jaffna.
