Island-wide SFHQs Contribute to Commemoration of National Independence Day

Contributing their share to the annual commemoration of the 73rd National Independence Day, Security Force Headquarters around the country on Thursday (4) marked the day with elaborate arrangements, such as flag-hoisting, observance of two-minute silence in honour of all patriots and War Heroes, reading of the Commander's message on Independence Day, symbolic tree planting gestures and watching of live telecast of the main ceremony from Colombo Independence Square, etc.

All officers and other ranks at the SFHQ-KLN assembled there and followed formalities as mentioned above. On behalf of the Kilinochchi Commander, the National flag was hoisted by Brigadier Admin and Quartering of the Security Force Headquarters-Kilinochchi, Brigadier Deepal Hathurusinghe. Then followed the two-minute silence to remember all patriots and War Heroes who scarified their lives for the noble cause of defending the freedom, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Mother Sri Lanka. The Staff Officer 1 (Admin) of Security Force Headquarters (Kilinochchi).

Meanwhile, the Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) celebrated the 73rd National Independence Day with the participation of Officers and Other Ranks. The National Flag was hoisted by Brigadier General Staff of the Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna, Brigadier Prasanna Gunaratne and all ranks followed formal arrangements as mentioned above. The Commander's Independence Day message was delivered by Brigadier General Staff of the Security Force Headquarters -Jaffna.

Similarly, Security Force Headquarters -West (SFHQ-West) marked the 73rd National Independence Day with the participation of officers and Other Ranks. The National Flag was hoisted by Brigadier Administration and Quartering of the Security Force Headquarters West, Brigadier T.M Abeyrathna and it followed a two-minute silence in honour of fallen patriots. The Army Chief's message was read out by Staff Officer of the Security Force Headquarters-West on behalf of the West Commander. All other features as mentioned above were observed.

Similarly, troops of the 12 Division HQ in Hambanthota under the SFHQ- Central also marked the Independence Day celebration by conducting sapling planting inside the Divisional headquarters premises on Thursday (4).

Coincident with the National Independence Day ceremony on Thursday (4), 14 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) troops of the Security Forces-Mullaittivu meanwhile carried out a Sharamadana campaign to clean the Oddusudan Rural hospital premises as one of the community-oriented projects.

During this campaign, troops cleaned the entire surroundings in the compound and cleaned the wards, together with members of the hospital staff. At noon, troops provided a sumptuous lunch to the inmates in the hospital and the hospital staff. Lieutenant Colonel Charith Athuldoraaratchchi, Commanding Officer 14 SLSR together with few officers joined the move.

Meanwhile, troops of the Security Force HQ-Mullaittivu celebrated the 73 rd National Independence Day at the HQ premises under the guidance of Major General Jagath Ratnayake, Commander, Security Forces-Mullaittivu. As the Chief Guest, Brigadier K.A.W.S Rathnayake, Brigadier General Staff, SF - MLT delivered the Commander's speech after flags were hoisted.

After hoisting the National Flag at the premises followed by a two-minute silence, the National Anthem singing and reading of the message of the Commander of the Army took place.

Planting of a sapling also marked the occasion.

In the meantime, the Vijayabahu Infantry Regimental Centre launched a sequence of events on 4 February 2021 with the participation of Deputy Centre Commandant, Staff Officers and Other Ranks to mark the Independence Day. The programme commenced with hoisting of the National Flag by the Deputy Centre Commandant of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Colonel Rukshan Kannangara and a two-minute silence in honour of fallen war heroes who scarified their lives for the noble cause of defending the freedom, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Mother Sri Lanka.

Independence Day message of the Commander of the Army was delivered and all troops then watched the live telecast of the Independence Day ceremony and His Excellency the President’s Independence Day speech. After that, planting of saplings in the camp premises got underway with the participation of All Ranks.

In the meantime, Trincomalee-based Army School of Logistics (ASL) marked Sri Lanka’s 73rd Independence Day anniversary in the premises giving pride of place to flag hoisting, tree planting, observance of one-minute silence to honour fallen War Heroes and reading of the Army Commander's message for the occasion.

A special religious ceremony was also conducted at the ASL premises before alms were offered to the Maha Sangha who arrived there representing seven temples in Trincomalee area.

On the directions of the ASL, Commandant, Brigadier Ranjan Jayasekara, Other Ranks who were promoted to the next rank on the recommendation of the Commander of the Army were presented with their new ranks in parallel to the event.

Senior Instructors, Faculty Members, Permanent Staff, Student Officers and all ranks took part in the 73rd Independence Day commemoration.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) at Diyatalawa also conducted several programmes to coincide with the 73rd Independence Day with a flag- hoisting ceremony, troop address and a tree planting programme at the SLMA premises. At the inception, the National Flag and the SLMA flag were hoisted before the memory of fallen national heroes was remembered observing a two-minute silence.

The Deputy Commandant, Brigadier Anil Peiris on behalf of the SLMA Commandant addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of the Independence Day. Afterwards, a few intakes of Officer Cadets participated in a cleaning drive along the railway line from Idalgasinna to Haputale. Meanwhile, a parallel cleaning project that continued covered the Ayurvedic Hospital, Diyathalawa and Viharakele Temple and it was done under the supervision of the Commanding Officer- Admin Wing, Colonel Varna Fernando and CI - Military Training Wing, Colonel Kaminda Silva. The tree plantation in the camp premises marked the culmination of the day's programme.
