Island-wide Army Troops Join International Coastal Clean-up Week

Army troops under the instructions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage and respective senior Officers in different establishments. joined their hands together to mark the International Coastal Clean-up Week during 17 -25 September 2022.

11 Sri Lanka Light Infantry troops of the 513 Brigade under command to the 51 Division of the Security Force HQ –Jaffna conducted a Sharamadana campaign along the Karainagar beach patch to rid pollutants, together with Municipal Council employees and civilians.

Similarly, troops under command to 681 and 682 Brigades of the 68 Division of the Security Force HQ –Mullaittivu carried out a beach cleaning project in the general areas of Chalai and Velai on account of the special week, dedicated for coastal cleaning.

All these campaigns were closely supervised by the respective Security Force Commanders, General Officer Commandings, Brigade Commanders and Commanding Officers.

Meanwhile, troops of 14 and 61 Divisions under command to the Security Forces - West contributed their share to the beach cleaning in western and southern coastal belts.

Similarly, in line with the International Coastal Clean-up Day troops of the 11 (V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) of the 231 Brigade under the 23 Division of the Security Force HQ-East cleaned up the beach patch along Kattankudy to Batticaloa on Saturday (24).

It was done under the directions of the General Officer Commanding of the 23 Division and the Brigade Commander, 231 Brigade. Led by Major Y. M.A.B Yapa, Commanding Officer, 11(V) SLSR, his troops and Kattankudy civilians too joined the project.

In the meantime, 141 Brigade troops under command to the 14 Division of the Security Forces-West on Friday (23) on account of the International Coastal Clean-up Day contributed their share to the beach cleaning by deploying troops along the coastal belt from Negombo to Poruthota covering a distance of about 3 km.

Troops of the 6 Sri Lanka Artillery, 8 Sri Lanka Light Infantry and 2 Sri Lanka Army Service Corps under command to the 141 Brigade HQ joined their hands together with volunteers of the Negombo Municipal Council and the Coastal Conservation Authority.

Meanwhile, troops of the 18 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment and the 11 Battalion of Sri Lanka National Guard of the 241 Brigade joined a beach clearing programme for 4 days on 21, 22, 23 and 24 September in the general beach areas of Pandirippu, Oluwil, Karthivu and Ninthaur along with members of the Sri Lanka Navy and civilians living in those respective areas.

In addition to that, troops of the 242 Brigade, together with the 8 Sri Lanka National Guard troops conducted a beach cleaning programme in Arugambe coastal belt with the assistance of civilians in the area.

231 Brigade troops extended support to clean the Kalladi coastal line and troops of the 233 Brigade and 6 Gajaba Regiment launched another beach cleaning programme in Sallathivu Beach area with the support of volunteers who came forward with enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, 23 Gajaba Regiment and 3 Sri Lanka National Guard troops of the 122 Brigade under the 12 Division cleaned the coastal belt along Kudawella and the areas surrounding the fisheries harbour in Kudawella. Brigadier Nadeeka Kulasekara, 122 Brigade.

General Office Commanding of 12 Division, Major General Lanka Amarapala, closely supervised the project that coincided with the coastal conservation day.

55 Army troops including Officers, together with civilians in the area conducted the cleaning programme.
