Island-wide Army Formations Celebrate National New Year

Various Army formations around the country celebrated the Sinhala and Hindu New Year organizing traditional New Year festivals and many other auspicious events.

Security Forces Headquarters, Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) organized a grand New Year festival at the camp premises on Wednesday (11). The arrangement organized by the SFHQ-KLN was attended by the Security Forces Commander Kilinochchi Major General Crishantha de Silva. Soldiers of battalions serving in SFHQ-KLN area participated in many traditional games conducted especially during this New Year season.  

Arrangements were also made to distribute traditional sweetmeats among the soldiers by Presidential advisor Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thero and Mr. Gamini Keerthichandra.

Troops in the 571 Brigade serving under SFHQ-KLN organized another New Year festival at Kilinochchi District Hospital premises for the staff and the inmates of the hospital. Both soldiers and the hospital staff participated in these events. Soldiers also distributed traditional sweetmeats and gift parcels among the inmates and the staff of the hospital. General Officer Commanding (GOC) 57 Division Brigadier KRP Rowel attended the event as the Chief Guest accompanied by Brigade Commander 571 Brigade Colonel N Hathurusinghe, Officers and Hospital Staff.

Army’s 574 Brigade also organized a New Year festival at Mankulam Maha Vidyalaya Play Grounds with the participation of a large number of civilians in the area. GOC 57 Division graced the event as the Chief Guest. Brigade Commanders of 572 and 574 Brigades Colonel PGMVJ Pananwala and Colonel HEMRBT Hathnagoda, Commanding Officers of the area, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mankulam and religious dignitaries were also present.

Meanwhile, soldiers under 23 Division had their New Year festivals with the participation of both civilians and soldiers in the area. Beat group of the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps entertained the crowds while all traditional events were conducted, including an “Awurudu Kumari” beauty pageant. All three communities living in the area; Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim participated along with the soldiers in harmony.

In the meantime, Members of the Army serving in 64 Division area under Security Forces Headquarters Mullaitivu in close cooperation and coordination with Government officials and civilians in the area, held a Sinhala-Hindu New Year festival at Kachchilamadu Kovil Premises on Tuesday (10).

Several traditional events were organized for civilians and Army personnel and ended with a musical evening and a breathtaking display of fireworks.

Brigadier HWMSDB Pananwala General Officer Commanding 64 Division organized The New Year Festival with the Coordination of AGA Office at Oddusudan and other Civil and Government organizations. Commander Security Forces Mullaitivu Major General LBR Mark, GA Mullittivu Mr. T Vethanayahan, AGA Oddusuddan Mr T Thireshkumar, Brigadier HWMSDB Pananwala, several other dignitaries and more than 1500 civilians took part in the New Year festival.
