Inter Regiment Swimming &;amp; Water Polo Championship Ends With New Hopes

The Inter Regiment swimming championship tournament of the Army was held on a grand scale at Army Physical Training School Swimming Pool at Panagoda Monday (10) evening, witnessed by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest on the occasion.

Swimmers from 18 Regiments during the three-day tournament vied for supremacy, creating new hopes for the future in the world of swimming.

50 m (free style) for novices (male), 50 m (free style) for novices (female), 50 m (back stroke) for novices (male), 50 m (back stroke) for novices (female), 50 m (chest stroke) open event for males, 50 m X 4 (relay) event for males, 50 m (free style) for the disable, 50 m (chest stroke) free event for females, free 50 m X 4 event for invited for Navy, Air Force, Police competitors and the 50 m X 4 open event for males adorned Monday’s (10) final day of the tournament.
 
Championship trophies were awarded separately to the novices’ events, water polo and the open events. The exhibition events for the disable attracted much attention of the spectators as this year’s event was competed by the biggest number of disable athletes.

Championship in the novices’ category was clinched by Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP). Gajaba Regiment (GR) swimmers received the runners-up slot.

Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) won the championship in water polo and the runners-up were from the GR.

In the open category SLSR carried away the championship and the swimmers in Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC) picked the runners-up slot.

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as the Chief Guest on the occasion gave away all championship trophies to the winners and winning teams.
