The 49th Army Inter Regiment Athletic Meet-2012, organized by the Army Athletic Committee, came to an end on Thursday (15) evening with all the pomp and ceremony of a sports event of international standards.
Those keen sports men and women of 24 Regiments and 7 Women’s Corps displayed highest professional sportsmanship during the three-day tournament. Over 1000 Army athletes representing their Regiments and Corps vied with their fellow-athletes for three days (Nov 13,14 & 15) at Sugathadasa Stadium for supremacy.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army at the invitation of Major General R.M.D Rathnayaka, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Athletic Committee, graced the final award ceremony as the Chief Guest.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army in his oration to the occasion appealed the sportsmen to be prepared to take part in more and more international events in the future.
Comprised of track and field events, the annual Meet mirrored the enthusiasm Army sportsmen have in Marathon races and relays, Long distance running, Archery, High and Long Jumps, Shot Puts, Javelin, Discus throwing Power lifting, Swimming, Shooting, Badminton, Volleyball, Cycling and an array of other sports. 27 Men’s events and 25 Women’s events added spirits of sportsmanship to the three-day long Meet.
The tournament reached its final stage after initial competitions were conducted at regimental levels within several weeks before their participation in final rounds at the Meet. Thursday (15) final sessions saw 1500 m, 100 m (men and women), 400m x 4 (relay) and the traditional tug of war taking place
Instructors at the Panagoda Army Physical Training School (APTS) added variety to the closing ceremony staging a spectacular display of physical training.
Major General R.M.D Ratnayake, Chairman, Army Athletics Committee welcomed the Chief Guest on arrival before the final rounds got underway in the presence of a distinguished gathering of invitees and Army personnel.
This platform for display of Army’s athletic skills and talents at Sugathadasa Stadium was coloured by band displays which added glamour to the occasion through patriotic melodies.
The overall Championship in Men’s events in the Inter Regiment Meet went to Sri Lanka Artillery while Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers secured runners-up in the Meet.
The climax of the Meet reached as the Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest was invited to award medals and trophies to competitors who excelled in different fields of sports.
