GW Marks its 24th Anniversary

Officers and soldiers, attached to Gemunu Watch (GW) at Kuruwita Regimental Headquarters commemorated GW’s 24th anniversary giving pride of place to religious observances.

A special Bodhi Pooja followed by an all-night Pirith Chanting at the premises culminated on the following day with offer of Heel Dana (breakfast) to the members of the Maha Sangha. The same evening, GW troops made a special Pooja to the Ratnapura Sri Saman Maha Devalaya and invoked blessings on the GW and its troops.

On Monday (19), Colonel A.P.I Fernando, GW Centre Commandant was accorded a Guard Turn Out plus a Guard of Honour as one segment of the anniversary ceremonies.

Towards the end of the ceremony, Centre Commandant and senior officers placed floral wreaths at the GW war memorial and saluted the memory of fallen GW War Heroes. A fellow-lunch with all ranks culminated the series of ceremonies.

GW Regiment was raised on 19th March 1988 and Kuruwita was selected as the Regimental Headquarters. However, it traced its origins to the Diyatalawa Uva Camp where it saw its birth on 7th December 1962 as an Infantry unit.
