Flood Relief & Rescue Operations of Army Troops in Full Swing Continue

The Sri Lanka Army on the directions of the Ministry of Defense and the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Army troops have been deployed to rescue and provide disaster relief to the victims of major/ flash floods in low-lying areas near the rivers caused by the adverse weather conditions throughout the island.

Army troops are in alert around the island to be responsive to the disasters and damages, being caused to public life and property, as torrential rains continue. Further, disaster rescue, repair, and relief services are in full swing in areas of Dehiowita (Thalduwa), Idamgoda, Kalawana, Elapatha, Ayagama, Neluwa, Bulathsinhala, Agalawatta, Thihagoda, Baddegama, Elpitiya, Divithura, Thawalama, Malimbada, Athuraliya, Morawaka, Akuressa, Seethawaka, Kelanimulla Tihagoda (Narangoda) and Kamburupitiya (Godawa) with rescue boats.

Also, Army troops have swiftly responded to prevent a massive disaster repairing and readjusting the eroded areas of Kelani river banks in Kelanimulla area on 02 June 2024.

In addition, the Unicon and WMZ Army vehicles have been dispatched to the disaster-affected areas of Kalutara, Matara and Galle as an immediate response. Meanwhile, the Army troops have already established the cooking facilities with the assistance of the residents to provide meals for the displaced individuals in Akuressa, Malimbada, Neluwa and Salawa areas, and efforts to provide drinking water and medical facilities are also being in progress.

Moreover, children aged one to three years were safely transported from Athuraliya Health Office to Akuressa Health Office due to flooding for their vaccination by the armoured vehicle of the Sri Lanka Army as a rapid reaction on existing situation.

Further, army troops deployed in the flood-affected areas to provide food for the displaced people, ensuring the restoration of electricity and communication services, while conducting disaster relief operations in affected areas.
