With the firm resolve of raising the National Game, Volleyball to international standards, Sri Lanka Army is to erect volleyball courts in all Divisions with 1000 seating capacity in each according to a conceptual notion, proposed by Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army.
The first of such volleyball court, built at 61 Division Headquarters in Vavuniya under the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ - W) saw its inaugural opening on Friday (30) during a ceremony, headed by Major General Boniface Perera, Commander, SFHQ - W.
Construction of the volleyball court within a period of 68 days, despite intermittent weather constraints that prevailed in the province, was enthusiastically supported by the troops of all Brigades and Units under the 61 Division.
Soon after the opening, the inaugural exhibition match between Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) and Gajaba Regiment (GR) volleyball teams took place amidst cheers and applause in the presence of Major General Boniface Perera, Commander, SFHQ-W, General Officer Commanding, 61 Division, Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, other ranks, Sri Lanka Air Force officers, Police officers and a gathering of civil invitees.
Just hours before the event Major General Boniface Perera opened the new public cafeteria, barber saloon, tailor shop, library and the TV auditorium at the same 61 Division Headquarters at the invitation of Brigadier D.M.W.W.W.M.R.B.M Daulagala, General Officer Commanding, 61 Division.
