Sri Lanka Army, currently recognized as a troop contributing Army to the UN Peace Keeping Missions, has received one more feather in its cap as its first-ever Lebanon-bound contingent of 150 Army personnel, is now set to leave on UN assignments.
The contingent, made up of 8 officers and 91 soldiers of the Mechanized Infantry Regiment, the latest addition to the Sri Lanka Army and 2 officers and 39 soldiers of other supportive elements, including Special Forces, Commandos, Snipers, Signalmen, Military Police, Engineers, Medical Corps, Engineer Services Regiment, Ordnance Corps and General Service Corps, is to be commanded by Lieutenant Colonel H. M. S. Herath of the Mechanized Infantry Regiment during their stay in Lebanon.
The entire contingent of 10 Officers and 140 Other Ranks scheduled to leave for Lebanon had its passing out parade before their departure at the parade ground of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regimental Centre at Army Cantonment Panagoda during the weekend.
Vice Chancellor, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and Colonel of the Mechanized Infantry Regiment Major General M. P. Peiris graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
This is the first occasion Sri Lanka Army is participating in a peace keeping mission in Lebanon.
