Day’s Chief Guest Hits the First Ball at GR’s New Cricket Ground

The final highlight of the Army Anniversary Day’s chain of ceremonials and inaugural events at Gajaba Regiment (GR) Regimental Centre where HE the President graced as the Chief Guest at the invitation of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army on Sunday (10) assumed special significance as the newly-done ‘Gotabaya Rajapaksa Cricket Stadium’ was vested in the GR troops after HE the President hit the first inaugural ball, bowled by Major Thisara Perera of GR symbolizing the ground’s inauguration.

All eyes were glued to the new GR cricket ground of 5 main turfs and 4 side turfs of international standards as the President unveiled a plaque to the effect and began moving into the pitch holding a cricket bat in order to warm the new ground for a friendly encounter with the internationally-reputed cricketer, Major Thisara Perera who captained the Sri Lankan team some time ago. HE the President, now the batsman in the new pitch struck a couple of balls and left his signature on the bat as cricket veterans do, leaving memories for the occasion.

General Kamal Gunaratne (Rtd), Secretary Defence, General Shavendra Silva and a host of senior officers were associated with this inaugural occasion.

All those ceremonials and gatherings strictly adhered to COVID-19 health guidelines as advised by health authorities.
