Community Projects Given Pride of Place in Jaffna Anniversary Commemorations

To coincide with the Army’s 63rd anniversary and Army Day (October 10), Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J), away from customary military formalities, organized a chain of community welfare projects.

On the initiatives of Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander SFHQ-J troops at Palaly SFHQ-J Headquarters, Kopay 51 Division, Varani 52 Division and Veththalaikerny 55 Division, participated in a full day Shramadana campaign at Jaffna Teaching Hospital premises on 10th October.

All bathrooms, beds, roofs and other furniture in the Ward No. 05 were completely colourwashed by soldiers with a financial allocation of Rs. 190,000/= made by SFHQ-J.

Paints required for repainting of the Emergency Unit and the Dental Clinic were provided by hospital authorities to the 51 Division Headquarters as a helping hand to the project. Soldiers serving under the 512 Brigade colourwashed both units.

Meanwhile, the 19 Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (19 SLSR) and the 16 Battalion Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (16 VIR) joined hands together to give a facelift to the Ward 09 at Manthikai hospital on 9th October. The ward was in urgent need of renovation since it had not been touched for years for repairs.

Decayed doors, windows with their frames, old wall-side cupboards, filing cupboards, chairs and benches were mended and repainted. Broken tiles and rafters on the roof were replaced and walls of the ward were painted again.

At the same time, patients undergoing treatment in the same ward were offered lunch on that day while all resident hospital patients were given 360 pairs of slippers by the 521 Brigade at Point Pedro.

Commander 521 Brigade Colonel Tikiri Dissanayake, Commanding Officer 16 VIR Lieutenant Colonel Janith Bandara, Commanding Officer 19 SLSR Lieutenant Colonel Sujeewa Buddhadasa, officers and other ranks of those Units and the Brigade took part in these programmes.
