Sri Lanka Army’s Commando Regiment (CR) which has received recognition as one of the best special units marked its 42nd anniversary in a series of commemorative events, giving pride of place to religious ceremonies.
At first, troops in the Commando Brigade, its units and Training Schools took part in an athletic tournament that culminated on 12th March with award of trophies and certificates. On Sunday (13), an all-night ‘Pirith’ chanting ceremony at the CR Regimental Centre, Ganemulla invoked blessings on the anniversary where Major General Krishantha Gnanaratne, Colonel of the Regiment, CR, together with Brigadier Vijitha Hettiarachchi, Commander, Commando Brigade and Senior Officers participated.
On the following day (14), a total of 42 members of the Maha Sangha were offered alms, bringing the religious segment of the commemoration to end.
The same afternoon (14), a solemn ceremony amid ceremonials at the CR War Memorial inside the HQ witnessed by a gathering of dear and near ones of fallen CR War Heroes, Senior Officers and Other Ranks, saw the memory of fallen CR War Heroes was brought to memory offering floral wreaths. A formal vigil and a salute added significance to the occasion.
The apex of the anniversary took place on the very anniversary day (15 March) where a colourful Guard Turnout plus a Guard of Honour presented by Regimental troops saluted the Colonel of the Regiment, Major General Krishantha Gnanaratne upon his arrival at the location.
Brigadier Vijitha Hettiarachchi, Commander, Commando Brigade, Colonel Kamal Dharmawardana, Centre Commandant at CR Headquarters who were instrumental in organizing the chain of commemorative events, Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks contributed to the success of the anniversary commemoration.
