Sri Lanka Army, as it ventures into more and more agricultural sphere is cultivating another 10 acre land in Ekala, Jaela as a model farm.

The project, launched in joint collaboration with the Lakviru Sevana Vocational Centre for the slightly Disable and Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps under the auspices of Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thero and the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, uses only self-made compost manure for cultivations.

The land previously used by Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation has been given for this purpose on an initiative, taken by Ven Elle Gunawansa Thero. The Army started cultivation and a Dairy Farm at the premises several months ago.

The Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Ven Elle Gunawansa Thero visited this model farm during the weekend to review the progress of its ongoing cultivation work and find possibilities for sale of the produce at reasonable price.

It is being cultivated by the soldiers of the 2nd Battalion Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC). Cultivation uses only carbonic fertilizer and the farm also has a herd of 26 cattle whose cow dung is used as manure.

Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya also joined the Commander on this trip. Mrs Jayasuriya on the same occasion promised to make necessary arrangements for sale of farm products among Colombo consumers.
