Commander Reviews Progress in Army-Undertaken Development Projects While in Trincomalee

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, currently in Trincomalee attending to National Independence Day final arrangements took time off on Friday (1) afternoon to visit a couple of ongoing housing and development projects in Sampoor and Seedanaveli areas in the East.

As the first stopover, progress, related to the ongoing Army ‘Seedanaveli’ housing project with 56 new houses for recently - resettled families in Sampoor was reviewed Friday (1) afternoon when the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya visited the location unannounced, together with several senior officers.  

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, accompanied by Major General Lal Perera, Security Force Commander (East) and several senior officers went round the project premises and saw for himself how final touches are being given to those remaining 28 houses under construction by troops of the Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) and Security Forces Headquarters- East (SFHQ-E) working there.   

Sri Lanka Army troops under several phases have been engaged in constructing about 56 new houses for the displaced in this area. Out of them under the project at ‘Seedanaveli’, troops have already completed the construction of 28 houses.

The Commander during his stay on the site spoke to the senior officers and wanted all measures be taken to complete the construction of more houses for the remaining 1221 people at the earliest. The project costs Rs 9.5 million for those 28 houses and funds have been released by the ‘Habitat Humanity Sri Lanka’.

Earlier on the day, the Commander evaluated development and renovation work of the ‘Lankapatuna’ historic temple at Illangathurai and made inquiries regarding the needs of residential monks.   

In 2007, 2009 and 2010 relocation of those displaced families of the East was conducted by the Army in Sampoor and nearby areas with the assistance of state authorities.
