Commander Inspects National Independence Day Arrangements; His Stay Enables to Review Progress of Many Development Projects

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, now in Trincomalee, inspected all Army arrangements in place in connection with the forthcoming 65th National Independence Day rehearsals on Friday (1) morning.

Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal H.D. Abeywickrama and the Inspector General of the Police Mr N.K. Illangakoon were also present at the venue Friday (1) morning.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, though prioritized the arrangements with the Independence Day took time off to visit a number of Army involved development, reconstruction and resettlement programmes and projects in progress in Illangathurai, Sampoor, Seedanaveli housing project area and suburbs. His first visit was to Lankapatuna temple in Illangathurai area. During his stay in Trincomalee, the Commander was expected to inspect several other Army-undertaken community oriented projects within next few days.

This year’s theme of the National Independence Day is ‘Asirimath Mawubimak - Isurumath Hetadinak’ (A Glorious Motherland - A Flourishing Tomorrow) and the main ceremony, headed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, will take place with the participation of some 3825 personnel of the tri-services, Police and Civil Defence Force in consistent with the government’s policy of taking mega national events to distant provincial areas.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya after reviewing the rehearsals gave further instructions to those in charge of the Army parades to make some qualitative improvements and other necessary changes.

The Army Chief also instructed senior officers, associated with the event to ensure the people’s ability to receive closer glimpses of the day’s event without any hassle. 

Afterwards, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, together with senior officers went to Ilangathurai area in order to call at the newly renovated ‘Lankapatuna’ historic temple which was under the LTTE siege before the year 2006 until the humanitarian operations recaptured the area.

Troops soon after the fall of the East into Army hands restored and renovated this historic temple that boasts links to the legendary tour of Princess Hemamala and Prince Dantha who carried the Tooth Relic of the Buddha for protection.

The visiting Commander was pleased to see the entire completion of repairs to this sacred place with active participation of East-based troops and shared a couple of thoughts with resident monks in order to find out any pending work or other requirements in the premises.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya soon after assumption of office took immediate steps to conduct repairs to the Lankapatuna temple which remained destroyed and dilapidated.
