Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army, making his first formal field visit outside upon his assumption of office, arrived at the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) Thursday (19) morning to be warmly received by Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, SFHQ-KLN.
The day’s elaborate and hectic programme saw implementation of several community related projects in Kilinochchi. The inaugural launch of the SFHQ-KLN produced Hindu Cultural Troupe, Distribution of 100 sewing machines among Kilinochchi women, Donation of 18 push bicycles and school bags to Kilinochchi students were among the highlights of the day with the visiting Commander as the Chief Guest at those events, in addition to his engagement with other military formalities, including a Guard Turnout, Guard of Honour, Troop Address, Opening of a new Volleyball Court Complex, etc.
Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva welcomed upon arrival, reviewed the Guard Turnout honour at the entrance to the SFHQ-KLN and was invited to receive the salute in the Guard of Honour, presented by 9 Sri Lanka Engineers (9 SLE) of the SFHQ-KLN.
The visiting Army Chief during subsequent separate meetings with Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, SFHQ-KLN, General Officers Commanding of the Divisions, Commander, Forward Maintenance Area - Kilinochchi, Brigade Commanders, Senior Officers and Battalion Commanders serving the SFHQ-KLN, clearly but briefly, spelt out his vision for the Army under his command and shared views with them before he went to the Nelum Piyasa auditorium at the SFHQ-KLN premises in order to meet more than 1000 other rankers, awaiting to listen to him.
During the troop address, the Commander underlined the importance of discipline at all levels as Army personnel, dedicated to the national security of the country. He also pointed out the need to maintain excellent relations with civilians in respective areas and launch projects that could be implemented to promote social harmony, understanding and reconciliation in the region.
Planting of a tree sapling in the SFHQ-KLN premises and sitting for group photos as memories of the Commander’s visit to the SFHQ-KLN, were also included in the day’s itinerary before the Commander took part in a few ‘Reconciliation and Community Development Projects’ afterwards for the greater benefit of Kilinochchi students and civilians.
Of them, the formal induction of the SFHQ-KLN’s first ever Hindu Cultural Troupe, ‘Sath Ranga’ which consists of newly recruited male and female Tamil soldiers, marked a new landmark which came in for praise of the Commander of the Army. A three-month long training that combined artistic skills of Tamil and Sinhala cultures, gave birth to those entertaining multicultural features, staged on the occasion before the day’s Chief Guest.
Arrangements at the Nelum Piyasa auditorium also included the distribution of 100 sewing machines among women of low-income groups and also the donation of a stock of 18 push bicycles and school accessories to selected students from Kilinochchi where the visiting Commander as the Chief Guest gave those items away to the beneficiaries.
Towards the latter part of his agenda, the Commander commissioned the newly-prepared ‘Harmony Volleyball Court Complex’ at Mankulam at the invitation of the General Officer Commanding, 57 Division and enjoyed an Exhibition Volleyball Match played at the new complex. Teams from the 3 Gajaba Regiment and 9 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment vied in the encounter for supremacy under floodlights as part of the finals in the ongoing Inter Battalion Volleyball Tournament of the SFHQ-KLN.
