One more Brigade Headquarters of the Army, hitherto remained functional in a private property, belonging to a civilian moved out and established its new administrative complex in the general area of Vidattalativu under Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni during the weekend.

The entire requirement of raw materials, except cement and iron for construction of the new 212 Brigade Headquarters in Vidattalativu was enthusiastically collected by soldiers serving the Brigade from the area, a move that cut down the cost of the complex nearly by half against the estimated expenditure.

Their new Headquarters was ceremonially declared open by Commander, Security Forces Wanni Major General G.D.H.K. Gunarathne during a simple ceremony as all senior officers and soldiers looked on.

The 212 Brigade started its operation as headquarters of the Officer Commanding Troops way back in 1965 and it functioned as 515 Brigade between 1990-1997 until the 212 Brigade Headquarters was finally raised in the Thalladi Army camp. Later on, it was again shifted to Pallemunai area on 7 October 2007. With the commencement of the Wanni humanitarian operations, the 212 Brigade soldiers were deployed in the North for operations against LTTE terrorists.

After vacating the private property, where the Headquarters had been located earlier, Colonel M. A. S. K. Muhandiram, Brigade Commander 212 Brigade was able to identify a state land in close proximity and finally decided to move the 212 Brigade Headquarters there.

After the opening ceremony was over, the visiting Wanni Commander toured the area and inspected battalions, deployed under the 212 Brigade and the 215 Brigade. He also paid a visit to the Commando Training School in 212 Brigade area and spoke to a section of the trainees.

In order to add more significance to day’s events, the visiting Wanni Commander handed over the custodianship of a newly-built house to Mrs K. Kamaleshwari, a mother of three children who is leading a hand to mouth life.

During the tour, the Wanni Commander also declared open the new 215 Brigade new office complex and the new residential quarters on the invitation of the Brigade Commander, Colonel H. L. V. M. Liyanage.
