One more good Samaritan in the Army came to the fore when Bombardier R.M Sunil Ananda of 12 (V) Sri Lanka Artillery serving the 23 Division Headquarters at Siddhapura, Punani, acted promptly and rescued two passengers in a lorry when it collided against the rear of a speeding container causing serious injuries to both the driver and the other in the front seat.
Bombardier Ananda on accidentally watching how the lorry crashed against the container, rushed to the scene and evacuated both seriously injured victims to the nearest hospital. Likewise, learning that the unconscious driver assistant’s condition was fatal, Bombardier Ananda took charge of a sum of Rs 96,170/= he possessed at that moment before he was sent to the hospital for treatment, together with the driver of the vehicle no: 41-7119 which was running along Batticaloa - Polonnaruwa main road on February 15, 2015 at around 7.00 p.m.
However, the driver’s assistant, Ismail Sulaiman of No: 53 of Muslim Colony, Kaduruwela was pronounced dead on admission to the Welikanda Hospital after a few minutes.
Later on, the injured Mohammed Sarif Illyas, the owner of the vehicle who accepted the said sum of money, in a separate letter, addressed to the Army Bombardier who came to assist them at that critical moment, spoke high of the exemplary conduct of the Army soldier and his quick presence of mind to take charge of that money from his fatally injured assistant who succumbed to injuries.
