Barbados Bound Cricket Team Gets Commander’s Blessings

In another stimulating gesture of goodwill and spirits of cordial working relations, Barbados Defence Force (BDF) has invited the Sri Lankan Defence Services (SLDS) cricket team to engage in three T-20 matches and two 50 over matches under the BDF sports programmes project in Barbados.

8 Army players and 6 Navy players of the Sri Lankan Defence Services cricket team is accordingly scheduled to leave for Barbados shortly to be in line with the conceptual motto of the World Military Sports Council (CISM), ‘Friendships Through Sports’.

Members of the SLDS cricket team on the eve of their departure to Barbados paid a courtesy call on the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake this morning (31) at the Army Headquarters. The team during 3 - 15 August will take part in a series of matches with the BDF Division - I cricket teams and will meet fellow-cricketers of first class standards in Barbadian cricket clubs in the non-military sector for exchange of views and future prospects.

BDF cricket team will also play with West Indies Chairman’s team during 3 - 14 August, together with the SLDS team.

The SLDS team, headed by Major General B. S Vidanage, Chairman Army Cricket Committee, Rear Admiral S. A Weerasinghe, Brigadier W. B. S. M Abeysekara, Commodore A. P. N De Silva, Team Captain Lance Corporal De Silva and 13 Defence Service Players after a brief interaction with the Commander of the Army posed for a group photograph, adding memories to the occasion.

Extending his best wishes, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake encouraged those visiting cricketers and urged them to contribute to the series in an impressive manner and bring credit home.

Major General Dampath Fernando, Chief of Staff, Major General Anura Sudasinghe, Director General Sports, Major General B. S Vitanage, Rear Admiral S. A Weerasinghe, Brigadier W. B. S. M Abeysekara, Commodore A. P.
