The 21 - km long marathon event in the ongoing Defence Services Games - 2014 (DSG) that drew attention of all tri service sportsmen, added one more feather to the shining Army athletic records on Sunday (20) when Corporal G.K.K.S.V Gunasekara won the first place (men’s category) after beating more than 100 rivals.
In the men’s category, the Army carried away the Championship and the Army’s Lance Corporal N.G Rajasekara of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) secured the first place in the women’s category.
However, the Army became the runners-up in the women’s category after a close fight with the champions, Sri Lanka Navy. The marathon, starting from Uswetakeiyawa Naval base covered the 21 km distance and returned to the same place.
Rear Admiral M Jayasinghe, Sri Lanka Navy and Major General Amal Karunasekara, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Athletics Committee witnessed the event as Chief Guests, flanked by Brigadier G.J.A.W Galagamage, Director Army Sports, Brigadier Senarath Bandara and a gathering of senior officers were present during the entire event.
Meanwhile, sportsmen and women of the Army, Navy and Air Force, battling together to reach supremacy in 38 different sports fields in the ongoing Defence Services Games, have so far made several new records. This year the event is hosted by the Sri Lanka Navy.
At the moment out of the events that were so far held Army Sportsmen secured 1st place in Marathon, Boxing, Cricket, Shooting, Archery, Baseball and Taekwondo in Men’s category and Karate, Rowing, Rugby, Shooting, Soccer and Taekwondo in Women’s category.
The Army has secured runners-up slots in Kabaddi, Rowing, Wrestling and Wushu in Men’s category and Marathon, Handball, Kabaddi and Netball in women’s category.
