Army Troops Restore &;amp; Reopen War Damaged Wanni Church

Sri Lanka Army troops serving the 61 Division under the Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni (SFHQ-W), in collaboration with the sponsorship provided by donors, completed the renovation of the St. Doroti church in Periyapandivirichchan, Madu and officially handed over to the clergy on Saturday (26).

The church, venerated much by the community in the area remained partly destroyed and badly damaged as a result of terrorist violence in the past few years before May 2009.

Army Engineer troops volunteered and completed repairs to the damaged church within a few weeks since several donors offered material and financial assistance to the project. Free Engineering expertise and labour, offered by the Army saved a lot of money for the church hierarchy.

The formal hand-over ceremony, attended by the Bishop of Mannar Rev. Rayappu Joseph and Major General A.K.S Perera, Commander, SFHQ-W followed the church’s ceremonial opening and the first service after renovation and repairs.

In the meantime, Army troops serving the 53 Division in the SFHQ-W organized a special distribution of school books and accessories among students at Mankulam Maha Vidyalaya, Mankulam on February (25).

Taking note of the difficulties of those children and their families, General Officer Commanding the Division and all ranks succeeded in collecting much-needed school accessories for these children.
