Army Troops In Kandy Launch Mammoth Clean-Up Project

A series of Army organized community-oriented mammoth clean-up campaigns were conducted in Kandy area, as a precursor to the forthcoming 61st anniversary commemoration of the Army and Army Day (10th October).

On the instructions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Kandy-based 11 Division Headquarters, commanded by Major General Mano Perera, as the first phase of these arrangements, launched a massive Shramadana (self help campaign) drive for clean-up of moats, drains and areas, surrounding the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Four Maha Devala premises, St Paul’s Cathedral, Pulleyar Kovil and the Meera Makkam Mosque.

Hundreds of Army personnel, drawn from all field formations deployed in North, East, West and South participated in this project with the support, received from the office of the Governor for Central Province, the Chief Minister, the District Secretary, Kandy Municipal Council, Provincial Ministry for Environmental Affairs and the Sri Dalada Maligawa by way of equipment required for the task.

The Shramadana campaign, the biggest ever to have been organized in Kandy with the participation of more than 500 Army personnel continued through out the week beginning 20th September 2010.
