Army Troops Buy Jaffna-Grown Vegetables & Fruits for Distribution

A project to sell Jaffna-grown vegetables and fruits directly to all Army personnel serving the Security Force HQ - Jaffna and elsewhere in a bid to foster goodwill and reconciliation efforts between farmers and Security Forces began on Friday (12) in Jaffna on the guidelines given by General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army.

The project facilitated by the Directorate of Supply and Transport at the Army HQ saw fresh vegetables, bought from vegetable growers in Jaffna taken to Army families, residing in the peninsula for sale.

With the close coordination of SFHQ-J, those stocks were distributed among Army troops at subsidized rates on Friday (12) with the arrangements, made by Major General Priyantha Perera, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna. Troops consider the project would help both Army personnel and farming communities in the peninsula in the long run.

In addition, some stocks were also to be dispatched to Colombo area for distribution on a regular basis after educating Army personnel on the planned welfare measure.

This programme was implemented under the guidance and direction of the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna, Major General Priyantha Perera and under the supervision of Director, Supply and Transport, AHQ Commanding Officer, 5 Sri Lanka Army Service Corps.
