A friendly football tournament between Tamil Sports Clubs and Army personnel serving Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) got underway on Saturday (2) at Thunukkai Tamil Maha Vidyalaya grounds in the 65 Division area as a measure, designed to promote reconciliation and goodwill.
24 Battalions serving the area and many Tamil Sports Clubs took part in the full-day tournament. The final tussle in the Army sector was between 3 Battalion Gajaba Regiment and 5 Battalion Mechanized Infantry Regiment.
In the civil sector, Mulankavil Vinayanagar Sports Club and Kilinochchi Jayanthinagar Sports Club competed for supremacy.
3 Battalion Gajaba Regiment team and Mulankavil Vinayanagar Sports Club emerged winners after separate encounters. The Best Sports Club received a cash gift of Rs 25,000/= and the 1st Runners-up received Rs 15,000/= in addition to gifts and certificates.
Major General Udaya Perera, Security Force Commander - Kilinochchi gave away trophies and gifts to the winners at the end of the day’s tournament.
A large gathering of Tamil civilians and several senior officers, attached to the SFHQ-KLN were present during the tournament.
