Members of the Army Headquarters-based Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), were among the firsts to be alerted to the suffering caused by prolonged drought in Polonnaruwa District who with a large consignment of drinking water visited affected areas on Friday (8).
On a notion proposed by Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, ASVU, all members of the ASVU and the staff at the ASVU office immediately made arrangements in this connection and went on collecting 5 liter water bottles and distributing drinking water through bowsers as well.
101 families in Wadigawewa, 71 families in Wankolaniya, 51 families in Kadurugaswewa, 36 families in Pitabinduma, 150 families in Pathokwewa, 46 families in Nikahena, 147 families in Bebiyagama, 47 families in Nelumwewa, 52 families in Veheragama and a few more families elsewhere were given water bottles as well as bowser water during this expedition to Medirigiriya Divisional Secretariat Division.
Distribution of this much-needed water at this critical hour took place at Wadigawewa Maha Vidyala grounds, Pathokwewa Buddhist temple premises and Sri Piyadarshanarama temple premises within a couple of hours.
Mrs Ratnayake, all Chairpersons of Regimental Seva Vanitha Units, senior ASVU members, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - East (SFHQ-E), Major General Lal Perera, senior officers and several senior citizens in the area attended the distribution programme.
