Army Restoration Work Progress Reviewed


Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake on Monday (4) took time off to visit Aluthgama area and review the progress of ongoing reconstruction and restoration work of the Army - initiated project in affected areas.
 
Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake received by Major General U.A.B Medawela, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) whose troops with the Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) members are conducting those reconstruction works, beginning on May 27, 2014 conducted him around.
 
By Monday (4), out of nearly 210 damaged houses in the recent outbreak of violence, Army troops have completed reconstruction of 45 houses and another 115 are being built. In the same vein, the Army succeeded in restoring 11 commercial buildings out of a total of 84 damaged ones. Work on 34 more is in progress in different areas.
 
Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, together with Major General Medawela toured Welipenna, Adikarigoda, Pathirajagoda, Aluthgama and suburbs with a view to taking stock of the progress that has been hitherto made in those areas and spoke to a couple of victims whose property was damaged. He also visited the mosque, one that was badly affected and inspected ongoing work.  
 
He also saw for himself the newly built Bailey Bridge over Kaluwamodera, connecting Moragollagama with Kadolanduwa. ESR troops of the Army in response to a request of the villagers erected this much-needed bridge with the support of troops serving the 53 Division Headquarters of the SFHQ-West.
 
The government has already allocated Rs 150 m to the Army for repair work and a work force of about 765 Army personnel are currently engaged in the project.
