Army Renovates Abandoned Pre-School Buildings

The reputed pre-childhood development center, Yarl Beski pre-school at Gurunagar which remained closed for more than ten years, owing to terrorist menace, was re-opened on Wednesday (08) as a result of Army initiatives.    

Troops of 9 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) colour-washed and renovated the existing buildings and re-did the entire ground premises with grass and flower plants before its re-opening.  

On the day of the re-opening, the Army donated a stock of essentials to the pre-school by way of teaching and learning aids, sportswear, furniture, etc.  

Gurunagar village is mainly inhabited by members of the fishing community.

Center for Child Development (CFCD) and residents of Gurunagar New Housing scheme cooperated with the Army to complete this worthy social welfare project.

General Office Commanding (GOC) 51 Division Brigadier Piyal Wickramarathne, Mayor of Jaffna Mrs. Yogeshwari Padgunarasa, Senior Officers of the 51 Division and over 200 villagers were present at the reopening ceremony.

In the meantime, 511 Brigade troops renovated the “Udayasuriyan” pre-school building at Selvapuram. Symbolic hand-over of the renovated building to the school and the donation of furniture and school items, took place simultaneously with the participation of Brigadier Piyal Wickramarathne General Officer Commanding 51 Division as the Chief Guest on Thursday (09).

“Save the Children”, an INGO functioning in the area and Mr. Padgunaraja of Ram Construction sponsored the donation.

Kopay Divisional Secretary Mr. M Pradeepan, Zonal Director of Education (Primary) Mr. Vamadewan and senior citizens of the area participated in the event.
