Army Personnel Serving Around Jaffna University Premises Withdrawn at VC's Request

Military personnel serving the areas, surrounding the Jaffna University complex had been withdrawn in response to a request made by the Vice Chancellor (VC) to the Commander, Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) during a meeting on Tuesday (4).

A meeting between Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, SFHQ-J and a representative group of university dons, including the VC took place on Tuesday (4) on the recent spate of politically-motivated violence inside and around the university which was directed against the Police.

Jaffna Commander during the exchange of views expressed that eruption of violence on the campus was instigated by certain politicians who have crept into the premises on November (27) evening and the following morning (28).

“Army has no interest in getting involved in University affairs, but nobody can take the law into their hands and create unrest. Students should be concerned about their education and avoid bringing politics into the University which disrupts their education”, he added.

University dons pointed out that occasional Police patrolling along the roads, not in the close perimeter of the University but in the distance, would provide security to University girls from gangsters and drunkards as a security concern.

Major General Hathurusinghe requested the VC not to allow any outsiders, other than undergraduates and academic and non-academic staff into the university premises without prior permission, either from the VC or the Registrar, to which all those present agreed.

Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe pledged to do his maximum to get the three students, now in Police custody released as soon as possible.

It was pointed out during the meeting that it was only after university violence against the Police has aggravated, Army troops had to be mobilized at the request of the Police.
