Army Organized Students' 3rd 'Reading Camp' Held in Jaffna

The third round of the ‘Reading Camp’, organized by 55 Division Headquarters at Vettalakerni, Jaffna got under way at Udaththurai Maha Vidyalaya for two consecutive days (Nov 19 & 20) with the participation of about 125 students of 13 schools in the district.

This novel ‘Reading Camp’ project, being implemented in the 55 Division area, in close cooperation with the National Library Services & Archives Board, is aimed at further promoting the habit of reading among school students since reading habit is not very regular and popular among students.

Interestingly, during these two days, 125 students of 13 schools attended the ‘Reading Camp’ and completed reading of books, made available to them on both days after all of them were summoned to the Udaththurai Maha Vidyalaya main hall during those two days and assigned the task of reading.

During the sessions, those reading children enjoyed many different programmes and funny puzzle games with the objective of testing their power of remembrance and grasping their memory, connected to reading, just completed. Some of the teachers too joined the camp and sat reading during both days. This was the third such programme launched in the 55 Division area with the participation of officials of the National Library Services & Archives Board.

Each of those 13 selected schools from Vadamarachchi Zonal Education Sector was given book parcels, each worth Rs. 10,000/= as gifts and all the attendees were given certificates of participation at the end of the second day.

Brigadier B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, General Officer Commanding, 55 Division as the Chief Guest, attended the final closing ceremony on Tuesday (20). On the inaugural day, Brigadier H. Kulatunge, Commander, 551 Brigade, Zonal Education Director, K. Ponnaiah, officials of the National Library Services & Archives Board, principals, teachers and students took part in the ‘Reading Camp’ after a brief ceremony.

55 Brigade troops during both days provided meals and refreshments as well as transport to those students attending the ‘Reading Camp’.
