Army troops in Jaffna extended their support for construction of the new ‘Sri Baskaran Cricket Ground’ at Mallakam in a move to further motivate the youth to cricket and elevate standards of cricket in Jaffna.
The new construction work undertaken under the guidance of Major General Priyantha Perera, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna was brought to completion and vested in the cricket fans during a brief ceremony on Sunday (14).
Mr. Kanapathipllai Maheshan, District Secretary for Jaffna graced the occasion as the Chief Guest together with the General Officer Commanding, 51 Division, Major General Sumith Premalal, Mayor of Jaffna, Mr. Vishvalingam Manivannan, Divisional Secretary, Mr. S Sivasri, Vice President of Sri Lanka Cricket, Mr. Ravin Wickramarathne, Head of National Development Centre Sri Lanka Cricket, Mr. Kamal Dharmasiri and Commander, 513 Brigade, Brigadier Mohammed Fariz.
During the opening ceremony, the Chief Guest unveiled a plaque and declared open the ‘Sri Baskaran Cricket Ground’ at Mallakam.
National Flag, Sri Lanka Cricket Flag and Jaffna District Cricket Association Flag were hoisted by the Chief Guest, Vice President of Sri Lanka Cricket and President of Jaffna District Cricket Association respectively at the inauguration of the opening ceremony.
During the speech, Mr. A Seranus Nishanthan, President of Jaffna District Cricket Association extended his gratitude to the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna, Major General Priyantha Perera for the immense support and contribution given to them to make the dream of a new cricket ground a reality at Mallakam.
Soon after the opening, an exhibition T20 cricket match was played between two Jaffna teams to mark the inauguration.
