'Army Eastern Games - 2019' Ends amid Displays of Invited Groups

The three-day long ‘Army Eastern Games - 2019’, organized to showcase their skills and engage in competition to promote sportsmanship among the troops serving the East drew to a close on Saturday (21) in a colourful ceremony, headed by Major General Aruna Jayasekera, Commander, Security Forces- East as the Chief Guest.

Army athletes, representing the Security Force Headquarters - East (SFHQ-E), 22 Division, 23 Division, 24 Division and the Forward Maintenance Area-East vied in the athletics meet against their fellow-athletes as keen sportsmen and women in the Eastern theatre while displaying their high standards of professional sportsmanship.

Comprised of 32 track and field events, the annual meet mirrored the enthusiasm Army sportsmen and women have in Marathon races and relays, Long distance running, High Jump and Long Jump, Shot Put, Javelin, Discus throwing and an array of other different athletic events. The tournament reached its zenith after initial competitions got underway before competitors took part in final rounds.

The day's final programme covered events, such as 1500 m Men's finals, 100 m Women's finals, 100 m Men's finals, 4×400 m Men's finals and 100 m of civil employees. As the events for the Championship were progressing, the relay events of invited schools, 4 x 400 relay of Defence Services and the performers of Angampora Experiment Institute and Training Centre (AEITC) marvelled the viewers through their talents.

Amid roars of thundering applause, 22 Division with 243 points was declared the heir to the Championship in the athletics meet while 23 Division with 161 points was adjudged the Runner-up. Corporal S.T.J De Silva of the 15 Battalion of Light Infantry Regiment was awarded as the Best Athlete (Male) while the Woman Recruit, E.G.S.H Senarathne of the 2 Battalion of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps was rated as the Best Athlete (Female).

'Eastern Games', one of the most distinctive events in the sports calendar of the SFHQ-E played at the SFHQ-E grounds, Welikanda was inducted a few years ago and it has now turned very popular among the troops in the East, following the able guidance given by the Commander, SF-East.
