Army Cricketers Contend as Runner-up in 1st Class Major Championship

The Sri Lanka Army Cricket team emerged as the runner-up at the finals in the 1st Class Major One Day Limited Over Cricket Championship 2022, organized by the Sri Lanka Cricket Control Board.

The finals got underway on Tuesday (2) after many island-wide cricket clubs under A & B categories vied in the tournament. The Army cricketers competed under the B category.

In the finals, the Army team played against Tamil Union CC at the SCC ground and collected 198 runs for 49.5 overs. Tamil Union Cricketers had to get 153 runs in 37 overs under Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method. They marked the victory in 31 overs by 3 wickets.

During the finals, the Warrant Officer - II Asela Gunarathna scored 59 runs and private Mahesh Kumara 57 runs but Army cricketers had to be contended with the runner-up slot.

Similarly, Lance Corporal Edirisinghe during this tournament has scored 483 runs including 5 half centuries while Private Mahesh Kumara got 384 runs with his 3 half centuries. Private L Fernando took 30 wickets and Warrant Officer – II Sekkuge Prasanna burnt 28 wickets during this tournament.

Major General Sanjaya Wanasingha, Chairman, Army Cricket Committee and all other members provided necessary incentives for the success of the Army team in the finals.

Vice Chairman of the Army Cricket Committee, Major General Shiran Abeysekara, Secretary to the Army Cricket Committee, Colonel D.P.S.I Dias and the former player in the Sri Lanka National team, Major Tisara Perera, provided the necessary guidance to the Army cricketers.
