Army Chief Recalls Battlefield Gains & Extends Best Wishes to Major General Niwunhella

Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva this morning (19) after inviting Major General Senarath Niwunhella, one of the most prominent soldiers produced by the reputed Gajaba Regiment (GR) heaped praise on his remarkable career of more than three decades to the Army and the country on the eve of the latter's retirement from the Army.

At the Commander's office, General Shavendra Silva who is also the Colonel of the Regiment, GR commended the retiring Major General Senarath Niwunhella's dedication, commitment and bravery throughout his career and particularly in the battlefield as a committed soldier of the GR family. He sustained serious battlefield injuries thrice and survived. General Shavendra Silva also admired his integrity and unblemished character as a senior officer and his contribution as an outstanding shooter in the Army.

The Army Chief also commended Major General Niwunhella's role for promotion of shooting as a sport in the Army. Major General Niwunhella who maintains the championship record in shooting to-date since he joined the Army as an Officer Cadet and as the Chairman of the Army Small Arms Association has achieved many national and international laurels for his excellence in shooting.

General Shavendra Silva during the brief interaction recalled memories in the battlefield and appreciated his valiant contribution to almost all military operations in the north and east since 1988 beginning from the Operation, 'Thrivida Balaya' and all major operations until the culmination of the war for peace. "You are now holding an equally important appointment which is rarely offered to any other and I believe you would continue with those duties with integrity and commitment," the Army Chief commented. The Army Chief also wished him good luck with his future endeavours at a time the country is geared to carry out multifaceted nation-building tasks.

The outgoing Senior Officer also thanked the Commander of the Army for his warm wishes and thoughtfulness while mentioning the encouragement he received from the Army Chief in the performance of his duties. Towards the end of the interaction, General Shavendra Silva awarded a special memento to the retiree as a symbol of appreciation and commendation.

Major General Niwunhella has held a number of key appointments, such as the Director Personnel Administration, Commandant, Army Training School at Maduru Oya, Brigade Commander 231 Brigade in Batticaloa, etc. He is currently the Director for the Presidential Security Division.
